Average rating of 5/5 Perfect for Astronomy, 2010-06-23
I assume that these have been designed for astronomy - they can only reach focus for distant objects. This allows the optical design to be optimized for the job in hand - and they have done a very good job. The focus control is smooth and provides fine control. The sharpness at the center of the field of view is excellent, and (at least on my pair) the collimation of the optics appear to be spot on. Sharpness reduces a bit towards the edges, but it still gives pleasing star images right to the edge. The apparent field of view is also very impressive (4.4 x 15 = 66 degrees) - this is important because it makes finding objects much easier. Point it at the moon, and a surprising amount of detail is available for just 15x magnification. There is a tiny amount of false color on the limb of the moon, but nothing too distracting. The 15x magnification is just large enough to differentiate most Messier objects from stars. Perfect for getting to know the night sky.
To my surprise, it is just as easy to hold these binoculars steady as a pair of 7x35. It seems that the extra length of the binoculars help - hold them at the objective end. I often use them lying on my back - this gives reasonably steady views, but my arms need a rest after a few minutes. Same problem with the very light 7x35 binoculars I own. I think it is mostly due to the weight of my arms rather than the binoculars!
Are they optically perfect? No. Any good for planets? No. If you are after perfection, you will need to spend 10x the amount and buy a top end astronomical telescope. Any real down sides? I find the rubber eye guards uncomfortable against my nose - however I am willing to put up with this as they get rid of stray light.
The supplied tripod adapter works well with my 7x35 binoculars, but it is useless for the 15x70 - it twists and oscillates from side to side. Get a metal one.

These Binoculars far exceeded my expectations. For the money they cannot be beaten. A friend of mine has a panoramic countryside view from his lounge window so I took them there for a test run. Having used some 12x50 binoculars in the past I was amazed at the difference in magnification and clarity of the Celestron UpClose pair. Well worth the money, highly recommended.

Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant little scope - 100% recommend., 2010-04-17
"The best telescope is the one you use the most" so they say. I have searched the internet, read hundreds of articles, read magazines, toyed with the idea of getting a 'proper' telescope (such as the Celestron Astromaster 114 reflector or the refractor 70AZ) but had a moment of clarity: apart from the first few weeks, when am I REALLY likely to go to the effort of setting up a big scope? I mean they're really big and unless you keep it by the back door it means lugging it down stairs, plonking it in the yard and wrestling with the various knobs and bits to, finally, get a view of the moon or a nebula. Sure, they'll look good but to be honest, like my rice-cooker or the sandwich toaster it'll sit there gathering dust and eventually end up broken or in the loft...
Now, I thought of binoculars but, I have some of those and they're 10x mag. They're fine if you like to see streaks of light as the stars zip about your vision like fireworks. Get a tripod? Well, for the money, big (I say big when actually the biggest are only 15x) binos are not all that great and like someone on already said Amazon saide you'll need to be Data from Star Trek if you plan on holding them - forget it. No really, forget it - bins are a big disappointment for the stars. Only German soldiers in my WW2 picture books and bird watchers have them.
The Celestron travel scope is like one half of a MASSIVE pair of binos. From 20 to 40x mag they walk all over binos in terms of brightness and magnification.
I have packed it in its little bag (very useful believe me) and carry it up the Malvern Hills. Try doing that with a reflector.. In the perfect 360 view up their I've seen the heavens explode into life. I can get it outside, set up and marvelling at the moon or a nebula in 2 mins. Gaze and Go. Every night I have a quick scan at the heavens then get back to putting bath sealant around taps or whatever grown-ups do at night. Great.
Build quality is absolutely great. Sure, you have to be delicate with the controls and not heavy-handed but it's a telescope - what did you expect? If you're too rough to handle it then take up judo instead. I am careful with my lovely little scope and it opens up the skys for me and my little daughter every clear night. I can't believe how brilliant it is. My daughter saw a hot air balloon in the sky today - so small it was barely visible. In 45seconds we'd found it on the Travelscope and could count the occupants in the basket and watch the flames light up the red envelope - completely perfect.
Maybe you could get a better stargazer... maybe you could get a better bird watcher... but could you get a lovely little instrument that could do both for 70 quid? (2 million US dollars)if I drop it and smash it I'll be sad but get onto Amazon and get another. It should be 160 quid (85 million dollars).. but don't let Celestron know they've mis-priced it!
Want a cheap but perfectly useable scope for looking at the moon and birds and ships at sea? Want to use it every day? Are you not a Wall Street banker? Get this little beauty. If you really get hooked with astronomy then in a year get a reflector. You'll still only use the travel scope mind you!
Hope my review gets you looking up and going "Wow!" as our beautiful skys are wont to do...

Fantastic telescope, I bought it for my husband but I love it too! It takes a bit to get your head around, i.e just getting used to it and knowing the controls but it's a lovely scope with very clear images. Saw the moon in great detail, lovely. If a bit mindboggled when putting it together? Check youtube, write in celestron astromaster 130eq and theres a video on the first page it shows you how to put it together. Really helpful!

As normal Amazon delivered my purchase within 2 days, which is great service. The Astromaster took about 30 minutes to put together with no real problems. I had to wait a further few days before trying it out because of the weather conditions. When I did at last try, I was lost for words. The Moon was the first, being the largest and easy to locate. I have looked at the Moon for many a year but having used the telescope I was sold. I am now waiting for another clear night to further my excitment. I would recommend this telescope to anyone thinking about starting to watch the night skies.

My daughter had some of the useless plastic lens binoculars that I believe she wasted about 5 quid on, from a shop that was tagged onto either a zoo, or a science museum. I bought these for her as she adored her rubbish ones. I have a Celestron telescope, so trusted the brand, and was very pleasantly surprised with these. The binoculars have the two lens and single right eyepiece adjustments and (when focussed) the image quality is excellent. For kids the magnification isn't so great that they can't hold them steady. She's very happy with them, I'm very happy with them. Highly recommended and great quality.
