Average rating of 5/5 Great!, 2010-07-28
I think this is a great camera. I had the previous model and wanted to upgrade it. I have always bought Canon camera's and rate them highly. This one is a lot more compact than the previous model and so feels much more like a compact camera. Easy to slip into your bag. I take it everywhere with me. I have just been on holiday and it took some great shoots. I have compared my shoots to other peoples of the same subject and the photos from this camera are without a doubt 10 times better. Sharpness, colours, detail. The only problem I have with it and this was the same problem i had with my last one is that it is not great at night. On Auto it automatically picks the macro setting which is really annoying because all the pictures come out blurred. On the night setting the pictures aren't great either. It takes a lot of flicking between settings to get the right shot. So if you are looking for a camera for going out at night this might not be the one for you unless you have a tripod. But overall I think this is one of the best cameras on the market of its kind.

Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant little lens! - PLEASE READ., 2010-07-23
I use this lens on a Canon 50d, it was my first prime and I could not have been more impressed. The picture quality is pin sharp and an absolute pleasure when reviewing your results. Bear in mind that a 50mm on a cropped sensor is more like 80mm. This is a GOOD thing, 80mm makes a fab focal length for portraiture; face and head&shoulder shots are easily taken to a professional standard. The rough equivalent(on full frame) is the 85mm 1.8 and that costs £300!

Also when you later move onto a full frame camera(which the EF mount will fit) 50mm is a great length for candids and snapshots - so win/win.

I understand that some are not impressed by its build quality but you really are paying eighty quid for some fantastic optics. Autofocus is fast but not rapid and manual focus can be a little fiddly at times BUT these are almost enjoyable traits when you see the results obtained. I have recently spent hundreds of pounds on a lens that is rather soft at 2.8 across the focal range, its build quality feels fantastic but whats build quality if the optics arent quite there?

I am a big fan of this lens for other reasons. Its light gathering abilities are fantastic whether wide open or stopped down a little. I have had pictures come out looking like day with next to no light available at the time!

At 1.8 it is very fast but has a devilishly narrow depth of field, use at your peril! This lens helped me understand more about (digital)photography than any course, book and tutorial had before it. I learned to appreciate light more, how to move around a subject quickly and easily(I am naturally quite clumbsy!) to get the shot I want. It is not a telephoto! No standing still with this little baby, it wont let you and I love it for that.

Lastly...
I have this in my bag and get it out especially for taking portrait type shots. I generally use a 24-70 which is also a fab lens BUT primes really do excel at their dedicated focal length. Buy this and you will not regret it!

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent camera for the budding photographer!, 2010-07-06
I bought this camera as I wanted to take better quality photos than the Canon powershot could provide... I spent weeks upon weeks researching different cameras, different brands, lenses and kits and eventually came to a decision between this one and the equivalent Nikon. While the Nikon was slightly cheaper, the Canon won, partially because it comes with the software you need to edit your photos in RAW (a very useful tool, Google it if you're unsure what it is), whereas Nikon charged extra for it, making them about equally priced.

I haven't been disappointed in this camera, especially now I'm learning how to use the manual settings. I would say that buying a user guide is essential, as the booklet that comes with it, while covering the basics, doesn't tell you half of what your camera is capable of.

The quality of pictures is amazing, especially over the point and shoot cameras. This camera makes taking photos a pleasure and you'll be taking professional looking photos in no time!

The kit lens that comes with the camera is sufficient for the beginner, but after having the camera for a few months, I'm now looking at buying a zoom lens, to increase the range of things I can do with it (taking photos from a distance would be nice!).

When buying new lenses, make sure they have Image Stabilisation (IS), as it's an important part in getting non-blurry images without a tripod!

Can't really tell if these filters actually make any difference to the quality of the picture taken, but function perfectly to protect your prized lenses from becoming accidently scratched.

Bought a couple of these for my Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS & EF-S 55-25omm lenses.

I keep them permanently on the lens.

Not too expensive, when you compare it to the price of the lenses themselves.

Average rating of 5/5 The originals are the best buy!, 2010-06-01
I agree with other contributors that the Canaon units are the best for 'photo printing, although if you do "draft" printing a lot, or the results dont have to last for a long time, there is not a lot of difference EXCEPT that cheap refills often mean frequent head cleaning! These are well priced with a fast delivery, well worth purchasing,

Average rating of 5/5 great camera with optical viewfinder, 2010-07-29
This is a great little camera and one of very few with an optical viewfinder. It's a sensible size (not too small), fits well in the hand, and uses AA batteries which means you can keep recharged spares (plus emergency Duracells) to hand and never be stuck.
