Whether you've just finished working through Katherine Ulrich's Flash 5 for Windows and Macintosh, or have taken another route to Flash 5 competence, this book is aimed at you. Russell Chan is looking for anyone who has "mastered the basics of tweening and [is] ready to move on to more complex tasks involving video, masking, dynamic sound control, or movie-clip collision detection".

Flash 5 Advanced for Windows and Macintosh is organised into five sections covering advanced animation, ActionScript, navigation and timelines, transforming graphics and sound and information handling. Each chapter builds on what's gone before as the book deals with progressively more complex techniques, though that needn't stop you dipping in further back if, for example, you are itching to know how to do clever stuff with sound.

Chan gets stuck in right from the start with strategies for building complex animation from simpler parts. The logical structure of the chapters encourages you to fast forward if you feel you are ahead of the rest of the class. The numbered tasks (rarely more than six steps) together with frequent tips makes it a simple matter to locate a technique, tr...

Brilliant book for the more interesting ideas and concepts related to Flash.

There is more stuff related to Action Scripting and is a perfect steu-up from the Flash 5 beginner guide (again, another fantastic Visual Quickpro guuide).

If you think that you have mastered the basics of flash and would like to go onto more creative and interestin concepts, this is a brilliant choice!

Average rating of 5/5 If you want professional looking animations buy this book!, 2004-03-08
This is one of those books that markets itself well (by its contents, its promises, and the inclusion of a CD). I have about a dozen books on FLASH and this is the only one that motivates me to post a review here. Good technical, how-to books in any programming language must be hard to write as many of them are difficult to read. This is an exception. It is masterfully written. This person clearly has mnay years teaching experience and knows exactly what the learner wants from a text like this. The examples are explained very clearly, there are screen shots for dummies like me, and if that aint enough you've got the code on the CD! The description of each animation you are trying to create is kept succinct but with sufficient detail that you can follow what is going on. Though the word 'advanced' is used in the title, don't let this put you off. The best way to learn is by following an example and then by trying to modify the example. This book lets you do this, and so you don't need to be that adavanced. Well done DR. Chun. What is also superb about this book is the accompanying CD-ROM. It opens with an html file allowing you instant access to the flash swf files, so that you can see the fully working animation before you dive in to emulate it. Having identified the animation you want you can easily locate the chapter in the book and the flash file on the CD. This book is excellent value for money.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent guide to improving your skills, 2003-01-28
This book covers lots of tutorials and guides to furthering your Flash skills. However, I found the section on ActionScript to be a little on the light side. It's well designed and the layout is easy on the eyes. Overall a very good book and fantastic value for money too.
