An interesting and challenging book, but one to be read critically.

The spirituality referred to in the title is a spirituality of the self - I am my own supreme spiritual authority, because no one knows what it's like to be me better than I do. This spirituality should be on the rise as it resonates with the dominant idea of the age - the autonomous individual, subject to know one but himself - but this spirituality of the self hasn't done quite as well as the authors hoped to prove.

The representation of Christian congregations is something of a caricature, nevertheless it gives an alternative perspective on why churches in the west are declining.

I wish I could read this book. I am sure Paul Heelas is a nice man and has lots to say. I read his earlier work with Woodhead on the Kendal Project and found it fascinating. Here he seeks to give credibility to the New Age religions. Unfortunately the book is unreadable. Maybe in some circles that passes for academic gravitas but you would have to chisel your way through this to get any sense out of it.
