When Peachpit Press released the debut edition of JavaScript for the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide, it immediately became one of the most useful tools for busy Web developers. Now in its fourth edition, this book has been improved, expanded, and more finely tuned. Written for Web coders who have at least some familiarity with HTML, the book doesn't necessarily require you to have knowledge of JavaScript programming or scripting. The presentation is illustrative and productive, and concepts are introduced via practical examples, explained briefly, presented in code, and then explained line by line. Using judicious screen shots and new code highlighted in red, the authors have made JavaScriptquite intuitive. In this new edition, they point out features compatible with only certain Web browsers using new IE and Netscape icons. Along with its core content, the text includes an excellent genealogy of the various flavours of JavaScript, complete with an extensive object flowchart that is colour coded by browser version. It also steps outside the base language with a chapter on visual development tools that use JavaScript, such as Dreamweaver, GoLive, and Fireworks...
Average rating of 5/5 Excellent - lives up to the title, 2005-02-06
First things first: this is a book designed to get you up an running with JavaScript as quickly as possible. It does that very well covering up to an intermediate level in the use of the language. It is NOT a detailed under-the-hood guide to the internal workings of the language or a comparative study of using JavaScript on client and server sides. If you're the sort of person that thinks O'Reilly books are fun to read then leave right now because this isn't nearly good enough for you. But if you're a developer (or even a hobbyist) who needs to know JavaScript quickly without it becoming a core skill then I can't recommend this book enough.

Although I must say to all the 'true geeks' out there, if like me you learned the art of structured programming then you should be able to apply those skills to any language. This book will give you the information you need to understand how client side scripting with JavaScript differs from rich client application development.

This book is well written, fun to read, informative, and easy to understand. It contains lots of useful snippets of trivia and covers a lot of information in a short space without confusing the reader. Well worth the money.

Average rating of 5/5 a taste of blackberries, 2009-02-03
I first read this book to my children and have now bought it for my grandchildren. It hasn't lost its magic. We read it from cover to cover the first time and my grandson had the book read to him in one sitting. It is one of those books you remember for the rest of your life. From start to finish it is unputadownable and would appeal to children from 5 to 90! A wonderful story, brilliantly written.

Average rating of 5/5 Excellent reference book - have come back to it again and again, 2009-02-04
Website design has become an interest and I use Dreamweaver to design / update my own work site and have designed a few for friends. I am mostly self-taught. I have used this to develop my understanding and working knowledge of Dreamweaver and am often reaching for it to remind myself of functions that I only occasionally use. Very clearly expressed information. Recommended.

Average rating of 3/5 Good book but limited online support, 2010-03-16
So nice to pick up a book of this sort that isn't huge and therefore feels approachable for a relative novice. In it, you work through a project to build a website and the authors explain what's happening in fairly straightforward language, so for the most part I understood what was going on.

This is a good book to get you started on CSS. As well as showing you how to style with CSS, it explains details such as differences between how browsers support CSS, simple work-rounds for IE, how to create separate stylesheets so that your pages are more print-friendly, and how to test your site and code. I suspect it would have taken me ages to have found some of this in a typical 1000+ page book.

But unlike another book in this series that I have read, there is hardly any online support - which is disappointing for a book about the web. It would have been so much easier to work through if there were downloads for each chapter to check against, especially as the book isn't always completely explicit about where to insert new/changed code. It would also be nice to have a supporting forum or way to contact the author to ask questions.

Right at the back I found a code to let me access an online version of the book, but I'm not sure why this is of any use, as it still doesn't seem to give you any of the supporting code or examples of pages relating to each chapter. I think it also gives you access to other online articles, however, but what I wanted was more on this particular project.

I wish more web-related books were written in this kind of language. Equally, I wish this book had more online support and would have rated it more highly if so.

Average rating of 2/5 Ever thought about colour?, 2009-02-18
I'm in agreement with the previous review: the assumption that this book makes is that the user will already have experience using Dreamweaver CS3. I too found the explanations laden with terminology I wasn't yet familiar with - some areas were alright, but the book could have benefited from full-colour images.

Average rating of 5/5 Really helpful for complete beginners, 2007-05-30
I read this book having no knowledge of Javascript or Ajax to start with, and found it very clear, helpful and comprehensive. There are lots of examples, and the authors take the reader through things step by step. Towards the end there are sections for specific actions, such as creating rollover buttons and drop down menus, and if you want to you can just type in the scripts to get your page to work.
You would need a basic understanding of HTML and CSS and so on to fully understand this book; they do take you through those in sidebars, but I'd say this mightn't be enough if you really knew nothing about either - the authors themselves say that they expect readers to have some familiarity with basic HTML and CSS.
The book is accompanied by a website which allows you to download the scripts, gives examples, and gives access to downloads of chapters which appeared in earlier editions but have now been removed.
If you've never done any programming before, the book is a good starting point for that; things are introduced slowly and with lots of explanation.
The style is casual and chatty, and the book is enjoyable to read.
It's probably not enough for advanced javascript, but that's not the aim and there are plenty of other books which give more advanced techniques and which would be useful as follow-ons from this one.
