Average rating of 3/5 pretty good manual, 2010-03-27
The manual is not bad, I also have the previous edition of it (for Flash 2004), but I have to say - the older one was a bit more friendly and easier to read for some reason...

Average rating of 5/5 A neglected gem, 2009-10-28
Having recently re-read Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", I was interested to see that the ideas contained in the book had been influenced by the political ideas and philosophy contained in both "News from Nowhere" (William Morris) and "Looking Backward" (Edward Bellamy). I decided to buy both.

Currently (October 2009) I have not read Bellamy - but have read Morris with a dgree of pleasure and satisfaction I rarely gain from political tracts.

The writing and story is straightforward yet contains profound insights into the workings of a brutal capitalist economy and the ways in which a more gentle, human centred economic system could exist.

This new world contains wit, romance and friendship but is not sentimentalised; problems exist and the issues are how to solve them for the benefit of all.

It was a delightful and politically stirring book. Read it and have some faith restored! Overall - as important as Huxley's work

Average rating of 5/5 covers both theory and practical analysis, 2009-10-12
This book is just brilliant, it covers basic economic theory as well as practical analytical methods.
It should suit both economic theorists and learners from applied fields.

I often come across books on economics that claim to be both theoretical and practical, but usually I get disappointed by the lack of practical tools taught in them.

This book however, lives up to it's claim: it covers intermediate-level economic theory applied to the health sector, AND it teaches you practical analytical tools and methods on how to analyze any given health sector.

Ideal prerequisites: knowledge of marginal concepts, utility functions etc. as well as basic econometrics and calculus. But I should make it clear that the authors explain all economic concepts, even basics such as Utility functions, so if you come from a non-Economics field you shouldn't worry too much.
The most important prerequisite is basic calculus, you should know about derivatives and such (Matrix algebra is not required) as well as basic statistics (simple linear regression etc.).

The book has two parts, the first covers economic theory applied to the health sector, the second part covers practical evaluation methods. The book shows you: what data to use, how to analyze the data, and even how to construct a Willingness-to-pay questionnaire. The balance between economic theory and practical analysis is very good in this very readable book.

Another nice thing is that they use actual examples from all over the world: Ireland, USA, UK, Sweden, Thailand etc.
I warmly recommend this book.

Average rating of 5/5 David Bailey: still staying on the edge, 2005-12-01
David Bailey wants the figures in this new book to be seen as naked, rather than nude. Nudes of course are about the idealisation of the human form. The naked figures in Democracy however, while standing with exactly the same framing, exactly the same distance from the large format camera, under exactly the same lighting, against exactly the same background, were pretty much free to display themselves as they chose. Contrary to the more habitual situation in Bailey’s studio, the subjects aren’t all models and celebrities. Initially they were chosen at random from the diverse group of people passing through the studio. Some Bailey knows well: others not at all. Continuing in the spirit of Democracy the figures are captioned by name, and the job description by which they choose to define themselves. Age, although diverse, is not mentioned at all; and Bailey emphasises that often the figures asked to pose were those more used to standing behind, or well away from, the camera. Nobody asked to pose refused, and nobody who posed was excluded from the final series.

The irony, in Democracy however, is that one of the strongest currents running through it is one the photographer himself is almost too close to admit. The subjects were indeed chosen at random, and they were indeed drawn from all who passed through the studio, and others who asked to be included. But there’s no getting away from the fact that the majority passing through Bailey’s studio is indeed the height of fashion and celebrity. Photographing such people unclad is by no means new. It’s been done, with varying degrees of sophistication, by contemporaries up to and including Bailey’s long term friend, and foil, the late Helmut Newton. But to present the constituent elements of fashion, and celebrity, and the street, truly devoid of their armour: naked, standing before the world, amongst their public, and achieving it with such undoubted style, is indeed staying on the edge. It’s very Bailey. And Bailey it would appear has a few miles of film yet to go.

Average rating of 4/5 Good but not exactly what I expected, 2009-11-01
I do like the product but since my German is more than basic I would have greatly appreciated pronunciation hints or even a life saving audio cds like are found in the Berlitz books for example. I also did find the theme selection ackward. Greetings and goodbyes should always be included in these ABC type books in my opinion. I wanted to practise with my child who is taking German lessons but will need an extra book as a teaching tool.
