Average rating of 5/5 Pure brilliance!, 2008-11-21
I upgraded to this from my older ixus sd400. I was more than happy with my old camera, it was tiny and took great photos - it was starting to show signs of age and neglect so I treated myself.......... and what a treat!! The 970is is slightly bigger than some previous ixus models, but the extra size is worth it for the increased optical zoom. I have taken photos of my friends wakeboarding and been amazed at the results - shaking boat, moving target, bright sun, water and sky - tricky photgraphy normally but this camera has taken some beautifull shots.
All the extra features are great fun and very arty too - colour accent and swap are great - you can change the colour of things - such as turn the sky green, or take black n white photos with one extra colour such as a red car to a black n white background.
great camera, easy to use, brilliant photos.... buy one!!!

Average rating of 5/5 Gorillapod SLR Zoom good lightweight alternative for a full tripod., 2008-12-25
OK, so it's not a proper Manfrotto tripod and you probably need something to rest it on that's higher than the ground - such as a wall, fence or post - but that's the point of this little gadget, isn't it?

Anybody who rates this low because it is not as sturdy as a proper tripod has missed the point. It isn't intended as a replacement or only means of supporting a camera (although it probably does that job for a point & shoot camera).

For an SLR user this is a handy addition for use in the field when a tripod would have been just too much extra weight or bulk to carry around - imagine backpacking with a bloody great bundle of metal sticks on your back? I thought not.

This will fit into most people's camera bag or day rucksack and adds less than a kilo to their kit.

I just recieved one as a Chrsitmas present and haven't had a chance to properly test it out, but the legs are far stiffer than I imagined they could be and I have changed my mind about it being far too expensive.

The original Gorillapod that I had played with in shops felt like they couldn't take a digital SLR, but this version certainly is sturdy and steady - especially if you use a remote release (or are gentle with the button).

I'll update this review once I've got a couple of dozen photos under it's belt.

Very very simple to use. Extremely simple to record up to one hour of video and also super simple to upload it to any website (utube or similar)
I received this as a Christmas present and class it as essential to have it with me at all times already. It is small and unobtrusively fits into a pocket or handbag makeing it easy to transport. Being about the size and weight of a mobile phone taking it along is no problem to me.

Average rating of 5/5 I could NOT be happier with this camera!, 2009-01-05
The first time I took this camera out in public (a bbq) and snapped a few photos, I had at least 3 people asking for its details with intent on buying it next day - it's that good. They were far from the last folks to show real surprize at the quality of the images. And the thing just looks great too - a fine 3 inch screen against matt black finish with brushed-silver dials and lens (Leica. German). There's a welcome solidness to it too, with just enough weight to suggest real quality. When you switch it on, you quickly realise it's as well designed on the inside too: the menu options are easy to navigate and require only common sense. It took me just minutes to get to grips with the multi-page layout...NOT THAT IT MATTERS! You'll never go there again! Why? The iAuto function! Select "iAuto" and, as far as I can see, you'll never touch the dials/menu again. In this function I took photos in countless settings both indoors and out, and was truly amazed at how the camera nailed it every time - fairgrounds, mountains, sunsets, my son's leaping around, parties etc. It appears to have a fill-in flash function, as even with a strong light source behind the subject, the final image is balanced. The ONLY thing you might want to do is cancel the "forced-flash" when taking shots of movement when there's plenty light around (and that's but one-button away). Take the ease of use, the truly wonderful quality of the photos and the sheer pleasure of the x10 optical zoom, and you have a marvel of a camera. One last thing - the choice of memory card should NOT be a casual affair. On recomendation I bought the Sandisk Extreme III (it's pretty cheap with Amazon...and incredibly expensive without!). This allows you to use what panasonic call the "burst" option - just hit the button and the camera will take (what sounds like) 2 photos per second without hiccups. Until now, I had just put any old sd card in my camera...big mistake! If you want a camera able to beautifully record both your family and travel highlights, look no further.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
I can't rate this lens highly enough as an inexpensive, high image-quality addition to your Canon. The quality of the images it produces (particularly portraits) is exceptional when compared to the 18-55mm kit lens that I imagine most people are used to.

It takes a wee while to get used to the fixed focal length if you are used to having a variable lens, but that's why this lens gives such great clarity. Sometimes you will find you can't get your desired image framed with this lens because it's simply too narrow (forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology!) - in that case you can move further away or revert to another lens!

Some people have said it's noisy, but compared to my 75-300mm USM lens the difference is negligible, and since my subjects are unlikely to be scared off by mild whirring I have no problem with what little noise it does make.

For me as an amateur enthusiast the most striking difference with using a prime lens such as this is the narrow depth of field - focusing on your subject and shooting, even in low-light conditions gives a very satisfying blurred background which really helps the subject to stand out.

If you buy one additional lens for your Canon EOS DSLR make it this one!

Average rating of 5/5 good for canon eos 1000d too, 2009-01-05
I agree with everyone else who has been pleased with this bag. I wanted a bag for the canon eos 1000d with the 18-55 kit lens and the bag is a great fit. There is also room in the pockets for a few bits and pieces as others mention. Good quality and value.

The card works fine in my Canon EOS 1000D. Fast enough to stop the buffer filling up. Only gripe is that you dont get the card reader as shown in the picture by Amazon.

I have quite a few Sandisk products now, SD cards, CF cards, memory stick and USB drives. Not one has gone faulty in the time I have had them and some are about 7 years old. I would not buy anything else. You can't go wrong with them.

Average rating of 5/5 Brilliant little camera with easy-to-use functionality, 2008-10-21
I bought this camera from Amazon in October 2008, which came with a free case that made the whole package very good value. I am no photo professional, so this camera is perfect for a layperson like myself who just wants to point and shoot! Delivers nice pictures; actually 10 megapixel gives lots of unwanted (!) details on your skin, too.. I am glad I didn't go for the 12 megapixel option, which would be too much for the leisure user (each photo becomes too large in size too, using up your SD card space quickly). Overall, this is an impressively small camera that does everthing it's supposed to do quite nicely. The functionalities are straightforward and easy to use as well.
