Gorillapod SLR Zoom good lightweight alternative for a full tripod., 2008-12-25 OK, so it's not a proper Manfrotto tripod and you probably need something to rest it on that's higher than the ground - such as a wall, fence or post - but that's the point of this little gadget, isn't it?
Anybody who rates this low because it is not as sturdy as a proper tripod has missed the point. It isn't intended as a replacement or only means of supporting a camera (although it probably does that job for a point & shoot camera).
For an SLR user this is a handy addition for use in the field when a tripod would have been just too much extra weight or bulk to carry around - imagine backpacking with a bloody great bundle of metal sticks on your back? I thought not.
This will fit into most people's camera bag or day rucksack and adds less than a kilo to their kit.
I just recieved one as a Chrsitmas present and haven't had a chance to properly test it out, but the legs are far stiffer than I imagined they could be and I have changed my mind about it being far too expensive.
The original Gorillapod that I had played with in shops felt like they couldn't take a digital SLR, but this version certainly is sturdy and steady - especially if you use a remote release (or are gentle with the button).
I'll update this review once I've got a couple of dozen photos under it's belt.

This portable tripod is perfect for those who need a steady hand for picture and video taking. It's metal alloy finish expandable legs (up to 7-1/8'') and carrying pouch not only makes this a stylish addition to your accessories but also provides the stea
Looks good feels good. Quality , 2008-11-29 If you can imagine Action Man in the 1920s and he's just about to film Charley Chaplin with his hand cranked camera, and if this tripod were made of wood it would be the exactly the right size, if you see what I mean.
This compact tripod is made of metal, feels good, looks good and is a quality piece of kit.
With free delivery it took about 4 days to arrive, brilliant.

A Real Bargain, 2008-09-11 I was looking for a tripod to take on holiday (alpine walking in Switzerland), so wanted something small & light whilst still being sturdy enough to hold a DSLR rock-steady. Also wanted to avoid those piddley travel tripods that stand a maximum of 15cm tall, and mean that you're either constantly looking for a conveniently situated wall to put the thing on, or you're crawling on your hands and knees just to look through the viewfinder.
The VCT-R100 fulfilled every one of my requirements; It is basic as tripods go, but strikes the perfect balance between size/weight and portability/practicality. And I can still barely believe it was less than £20. Bargain.

Giottos
The Giottos MT9251 Tripod is a strong and stylish tripod ideal for professional and amateur photographers alike. The high tripod load capacity makes this tripod an excellent addition to any SLR photographer's arsenal.
As a first time tripod buyer it seems good, 2009-01-03 I bought this after many days searching the internet and looking at product reviews. I have owned a D-SLR for a few months and started to need a tripod. However, the information on the best to get is pretty poor.
I was originally going to buy a Manfrotto promotional kit released for Xmas for £100 from Fotosense, but it seemed pretty basic. Also, the kit I was looking at, the Manfrotto 055XDB Tripod and Manfrotto 804RC2 Head, was declared 'unbalanced' when I put them in the Manfrotto tripod selector on the Manfrotto website. Also, there was one main feature I was looking for, a levelling bubble, and the Manfrotto didn't deliver.
But what made me 'dither' the most is I thought it was too expensive for a first timer. But I struggled for a review of this one. Anyway, I decided to get it, based on good reviews of the more high end Giottos tripods. I used it to take sunrise pictures this morning and it worked well. It reached a good height, it was stable and fairly intuitive to use. The pan and tilt head was good, the only problem I had was I had to take the camera off the tripod to change my lens, I don't know if this is normal. This was easy and the quick release was easy to use. I don't know if I will still think its good in year, but first impressions are good.

ok but not great, 2008-11-18 I like the coloured end caps for the legs but this is the most basic tripod!
This tripod does not have a swivel head on top which means you can only video things that are straight in from of the video. although you can slightly angle the view up or down by spreading the tripd legs in different parts you cannot get an acute angle.
Not good if you are doing product reviews for you tube!

Sony
Excellent for D-SLR Photography, 2008-08-22 I bought this for my Sony A300 D-SLR, and must say yet agian I'm impressed by Sony's products. The height this tripod reaches is great! I'm 6'4" and only have to bend slightly to use the view finder. One great feature is the detachable lock that you attach your camera too. This has a quick release mechanism that allows you to quickly detach your camera if you see something that you simply must snap!
One slight quibble was that when the tripod was fully extended it didn't seem as stable, there was a slight shake with a strong wind, but for the price I can put up with that!
