Average rating of 5/5 What a difference!, 2007-02-21
I could hardly believe it when I attached the lense - the picture opened up spectacularly, with little curvature at the edges and a nice, crisp image. It's a small, very light add-on too, so you won't notice any difference in size or weight of the camera when you are using it, and the lense is easily removed and carried about in the case supplied. And at the prices offered here, how can you say 'no'?

I can't recommend this highly enough, I actually wonder how often I'm going to film with the lense off now.

The 17-40 F/4 L USM lens is ideal for digital SLR cameras. It complements the 16-35/2.8L USM lens with a wider-angle focal length. The Speed/Silence USM lens is resistant to water and dust.
Average rating of 5/5 Great walk around for crop frame, 2009-01-03
I was bitten by the 'L' bug when I bought my 70-200 zoom, this lens has replaced my 17-85 IS USM; in itself not a bad lens but not a patch on this one.

Always sharp, constant aperture means less mucking about when zooming, a joy to handle and a great buy at this price. Is now my walk around lens on my crop frame EOS40D, yes I miss the zoom but I wanted the wide angle this (and only this) zoom provides at this price.

Rock solid you gets what you pay for, all zoom is internal so nothing to poke out which i also like. Great resale value, but i shall be keeping for when full frame DSLR becomes the norm. An investment you cant regret; you will love this lense !

Average rating of 5/5 Best value piece of Canon gear?, 2008-05-15
It's certainly up there with the cheap 50mm f1.8.
What you get is razor sharp images, quality construction and beautiful photos that seem to capture the scene as it appears without the lens putting its own spin on colour or contrast. Bokeh is creamy too.
If you're considering the 75-300mm IS, take a look at this before you buy. What you lose in length and IS you gain back with interest in quality.
My new favourite lens.

Average rating of 5/5 Not just for macro photography, 2009-01-03
I've had this for a few months and am using it with an EOS 350D.

Firstly, and most importantly, image quality is fantastic - it's pixel-sharp, and seems incapable of distortion or chromatic aberration. I have really no complaints here, not even niggles.

The AF is accurate and fast. It can hunt around a bit if you're not quite aiming straight, so the switch to increase minimum focussing distance (from 0.3m to 0.48m) is very useful for non-macro subjects. Alternatively, manually focussing first, then blipping the AF to fine-tune it, works quickly and reliably.

Lastly, I'm surprised at how much I use this lens, even after the initial excitement of taking poster-size shots of everyday household objects has worn off. It's a very capable portrait lens, particularly outdoors or where you have room to stand a few metres away from your subject. Without a zoom you have to use it in a different way, but I find the lack of variables actually encourages creativity. You can always crop it later!

I had originally set out looking for a zoom telephoto lens, something like Canon's EF 70-200 f/4.0 L lens. I've used one before - it's a lovely lens - but really on the big side, and at f/4 you need a lot of light to take hand-held shots, especially at the long end of the zoom. Also, this particular lens has no macro capability.

If you can bear to do without a zoom you'll get a lighter, cheaper, brighter lens with unimpeachable image quality, aside from the world of fun that is macro photography. Highly recommended.

Average rating of 4/5 Does well if you know what to expect, 2008-04-22
I've had one of these and have been using it for over a year. I wanted something that extended the eyepiece so I didn't have to turn my face sideways to look through the viewfinder. It achieves that aim just fine. Yes it does shrink the image - this may be an issue for some, especially those using cameras with a smaller viewfinder image. I'm using it on a 5D, which has a very large viewfinder image. So large, in fact, that I find it hard to take the whole image in without looking around it. The eyepiece extender helps me to see the whole frame before I shoot so I consider the image shrinking to be a benefit. I understand, though, that many will not. I've not found any problems focusing manually with the eyepiece extender attached.

4/5 stars. I'm knocking 1 off for the slightly plasticy construction.
