Excellent Camcorder, 2009-01-03
I first used this camera when I was on a fieldtrip to Berlin. This camera is awesome, it works in all environments, even snow and iot takes 10mp digitally enhanced. This is the first camcorder I have owned and it truly impressed me.

I have had my eye on this camcorder for a while now and after reading countless reviews etc i decided to take the plunge!

All in all im very pleased with it! its tiny! i was very suprised when i opened the box. Build quality is good and i got it the brown colour which looks really nice.

The quality is very good in good light and blows my old DV camcorder out the water! As for low light, i was expecting it to be bad after reading the reviews. But in all seriousness it is no worse than my old panasonic DV camera. All you have to do it choose the iso yourself and there will be little noise (i suggest iso 200 max)

Im only 20 so i dont want to be hauling a huge camcorder around when going abroad or taking my cam to the beach etc so this is perfect and it takes good quality stills to boot! There are lots of accessories in the box aswell.

Only thing is make sure you have a good spec computer if you plan on editing the video from the camera because the mp4 codec needs alot of processor power. My laptop can just about handle it but ive run into problems with the preview on my editing program being jumpy. So be careful.

So get this cam if u want a convenient camcorder that takes good quality video and stills in a small package you can take anywhere!

A great holiday companion, 2008-10-18
I had big problems getting hold of this camera despite good reviews in the newspaper, but what it turns out to be is a great camera for holiday movies and snaps and clips for YouTube. It's almost small enough to drop in your pocket without noticing. The controls are simple. The quality is just fine if that's the limit of your requirements.

I had bought it to see if I could use in my professional work - recording role play in management training. But even using the highest quality option the picture was too grainy to show on a large screen and, above all, the sound too low quality (it does not have an inlet for an exterior microphone).

So I've brought in on holiday instead and it's a great companion.

Excellent Point and Shoot Camcorder, 2008-03-20
Other reviewers have mentioned the excellent quality of the both video and still images from this product. I would agree with them.
Although its best thought of as a high quality point and shoot camera it does have some very useful features that are rarely present at this price level. These include a cold accessory shoe, external mike input(that can be adjusted), and a headphone socket. Most controls can be set through the easy to use menu system. On the downside I found manual focus almost impossible to use, what a pity they did not go for a manual focusing ring.

Using SD cards I find an advantage over HDD. Difficult to change an HDD, but you can always add extra SD cards.
The transfer to Computer is easy, but has to be done through the camera (ie the card cannot be read by a cardreader.)Also if you want to use the Xaxti Library function(transfer files without a PC)with an external drive note that it must have its own power supply, formatted as Fat32 and I could not get it to use drives larger than 160Gb. I wrote to Sanyo asking if this was a limit, so far no reply.

The Xacti HD1000 uses a form of file called MPEG4 (AVC/H.264). This can be a challenge to Editing Software and PC's. You will need a dual processor, 2Gb ram and a good graphics card (256Mb) to edit your material on a PC. My PC is not up to the task, but I found that if I trimmed the clips using the camera's onboard edit function, I could then transfer the trimmed clips to the PC and using Pinnacle Studio 11.5 plus I could add titles, transitions and music, but could not preview the results. However once exported as a DVD compliant MPG2 file this could be viewed.
I have noticed some reviewers mention the Xacti HD1000 only produces files that run at 30fps and 60fps, rather than the European 25fps and 50 fps. I was able to use 30fps but not 60fps. Once exported to DVD as an NTSC file using 30fps, using a flat screen LCD TV set caused no problems.
All formats produced by the camera can be viewed when the camera is connected directly to a flat screen TV
