Amazing, 2010-07-30 As normal Amazon delivered my purchase within 2 days, which is great service. The Astromaster took about 30 minutes to put together with no real problems. I had to wait a further few days before trying it out because of the weather conditions. When I did at last try, I was lost for words. The Moon was the first, being the largest and easy to locate. I have looked at the Moon for many a year but having used the telescope I was sold. I am now waiting for another clear night to further my excitment. I would recommend this telescope to anyone thinking about starting to watch the night skies.

A good telescope, but it could have been a much better one, 2010-04-05 The pros:
The quality of the telescope and the mount is quite good.
I think that it has a good value for money.
Now, the cons:
The tripod legs bend slightly when fully extended and the plastic "nerves" and braces seem a bit fragile.
The red dot view finder is unusable at night. During the day I could use the two black circles of the view finder to align the telescope with the intended target, but at night only a single red dot was visible. So I could not aim. I do not know if there was a problem with the finder, but I removed it and replace it with a different one.
NOTE the telescope does not have a standard bracket for the view finder, so I had to buy both a shoe holder, a bracket and to be a bit creative.
Another drawback to the telescope is that the primary mirror's center is not marked, so forget most of the collimation tools. In addition my secondary mirror seems marginally off center. I cannot align it, because one aligning bolt is stuck and the other two have terminated. But as I said it's only marginally off and I can live with that.
As for the motor drive, I find the lack of a "neutral" mode annoying, in general I do not think that it worths the extra money.
In conclusion, It's a fairly good telescope, but it could have been much better with only minor changes. If you have decided to buy this telescope, I would suggest the one without the motor drive.
I rate it with 4 stars because I believe it's a good telescope for its money, despite its drawbacks.

Great telescope, 2010-02-04 Being a total newby in amateur astronomy I read extensively through various web sites and product reviews before deciding on the NexStar 4 SE.
The three deciding factors at the end were: quality of the instrument, portability and price.
So far the telescope has not disappointed me.
It is a beautiful instrument, excellent build quality and the computerized star finder is a great tool.
If anything I would have liked Celestron to have included an additional eyepiece in the kit as standard.
The included 25 mm eyepiece gives a 52 times magnification, which is excellent for viewing the moon, but too low to clearly resolve the planets.
Being a 4" device, the magnification can realisticly go up to 240 times, so inlcuding a 12 mm eyepiece or a 2X Barlow lens would have made it a totally perfect experience out of the box.

Casual user, 2010-04-11 This product has been rebranded but for some reason it is slightly cheaper under the original Barr and Stroud brand? Anyway, we have a top floor flat that overlooks the English Channel and wanted something for watching seabirds (feathered variety!) and also ships and stuff out at sea - even the French coast - as we are near to Dover and Calais is visible on a clear day. It is perfect for what we wanted - powerful, and even on full zoom it performs very well indeed. It looks and feels a quality product and comes with an excellent waterproof cover - which we wont be needing but great for a travelling birdwatcher. We bought a mid range tripod for it which is of course a necessary item. All in all we are very pleased with it and not too expensive either.

brilliant telescope for the money, 2009-09-28 Fantastic telescope, I bought it for my husband but I love it too! It takes a bit to get your head around, i.e just getting used to it and knowing the controls but it's a lovely scope with very clear images. Saw the moon in great detail, lovely. If a bit mindboggled when putting it together? Check youtube, write in celestron astromaster 130eq and theres a video on the first page it shows you how to put it together. Really helpful!
