Average rating of 5/5 Terrific value, 2010-07-23
These binoculars are such good value for money. The image is bright, which is good for dull days, and they have great resolution, indeed better than many other makes I have tried that cost far more. They are small and light to carry which is a bonus. The only drawback is that they are not waterproof, but then, if they were, they would cost a deal more. However, the best thing about them is the clarity of image. Buy a pair, you'll be impressed.

These Binoculars far exceeded my expectations. For the money they cannot be beaten. A friend of mine has a panoramic countryside view from his lounge window so I took them there for a test run. Having used some 12x50 binoculars in the past I was amazed at the difference in magnification and clarity of the Celestron UpClose pair. Well worth the money, highly recommended.

Well, they do the job they are intended to do really well, they are small enough to put in your pocket, and light enough to carry on long distance walks.. They are far better than any other of the small binoculars I've bought - up to now...

Average rating of 5/5 Perfect for Astronomy, 2010-06-23
I assume that these have been designed for astronomy - they can only reach focus for distant objects. This allows the optical design to be optimized for the job in hand - and they have done a very good job. The focus control is smooth and provides fine control. The sharpness at the center of the field of view is excellent, and (at least on my pair) the collimation of the optics appear to be spot on. Sharpness reduces a bit towards the edges, but it still gives pleasing star images right to the edge. The apparent field of view is also very impressive (4.4 x 15 = 66 degrees) - this is important because it makes finding objects much easier. Point it at the moon, and a surprising amount of detail is available for just 15x magnification. There is a tiny amount of false color on the limb of the moon, but nothing too distracting. The 15x magnification is just large enough to differentiate most Messier objects from stars. Perfect for getting to know the night sky.
To my surprise, it is just as easy to hold these binoculars steady as a pair of 7x35. It seems that the extra length of the binoculars help - hold them at the objective end. I often use them lying on my back - this gives reasonably steady views, but my arms need a rest after a few minutes. Same problem with the very light 7x35 binoculars I own. I think it is mostly due to the weight of my arms rather than the binoculars!
Are they optically perfect? No. Any good for planets? No. If you are after perfection, you will need to spend 10x the amount and buy a top end astronomical telescope. Any real down sides? I find the rubber eye guards uncomfortable against my nose - however I am willing to put up with this as they get rid of stray light.
The supplied tripod adapter works well with my 7x35 binoculars, but it is useless for the 15x70 - it twists and oscillates from side to side. Get a metal one.

Bought these binoculars for my wife who has developed an interest in bird watching since we back on to farmland/woodland and have a hawthorn hedge between our garden and the adjoining field. We are delighted with the binoculars which are small, lightweight, well made and nicely designed. The quality of the image exceeded my expectations for binoculars in this price range. Ideal for bird watching because of their magnification, (12x)size and weight.
