NHM Pocket Microscope, 2010-08-30 Let's start at the begining, I didn't buy this as a toy. I needed something with more magnification than my loop for some grass id work. As the cheapest field microscope with 40x mag. would cost about £70 and given the good reviews this product already had, I decided to take a punt with this and leave off the field microscope unless needed. I have to say this did the job very well. It's not perfect and has its limitations, it can be a bit fiddly and is plastic but it's light, small and only £7 not £70. More importantly, the results were very good and perfectly adequate for my needs. Don't be put off by the price, give this a go and only spend more if you decide it is warranted. It may be marketed as a toy but don't be fooled into thinking it is one and if you decide it's not good enough for your needs, what have you lost?

Instructions for use at 400x, 2010-08-28 Instructions for Veho VMS--400 USB microscope
I write this as a professional microbiologist. This microscope is excellent but, at first, it seems impossible to use at high power [400x] because of inadequate instructions. I recommend practising on a simple flat object like a small piece of printed paper. Press the microscope firmly down onto it [or put the object into the lens cap] and focus at 20x. Now use the focus wheel to change to high power by rotating anticlockwise as far as it will go from that 20x position and then very slowly moving back until focus is achieved. [Note that it looks as if it should be possible to rotate a short distance from the 20 mark to the 400 mark on the focussing wheel. This is not the case. It is necessary to turn the wheel in the opposite direction to the 400 mark.]
As others have commented it is difficult to focus at 400x because the depth of field is small, the contrast is low and it is difficult to hold everything steady. This is not a fault of this microscope; it is true for the best professional instruments which overcome the problem by being very heavy, having precision engineered platforms for moving the object and special lighting systems (e.g. phase contrast). With the VMS-400 I recommend practicing focussing on a simple object as described above; it also may help to fix it to a heavy base or to place the object in the transparent lens cap. For smaller objects it is helpful to press them between glass slides for viewing at high power.

- Three magnifications - 300 X, 600 X and 1200 X
- Electric illuminator
Excellent beginner's microscope, 2010-07-24 My 8 year old daughter selected this herself with Amazon tokens (with a bit of guidance). The microscope itself is a brillant learning tool for kids to explore and understand their environment better. I would have liked more prepared slides, but then I suppose we can make as many as we'd like as the microscope kit comes with everything you need to become a junior scientist. In sum, good value for money and if you have a budding scientist in your family, or just a curious child, this gives you a tool to help expand their horizons.

- 15x magnification porro prism binocular
- Large 70mm objective lens offers maximum image brightness in low-light and long-range conditions
- Four-element objective lens for ultra sharp focus across the field of view
- Multi-Coated optics for sharp, clear views
- Suitable for terrestrial or astronomical viewing
Perfect for Astronomy, 2010-06-23 I assume that these have been designed for astronomy - they can only reach focus for distant objects. This allows the optical design to be optimized for the job in hand - and they have done a very good job. The focus control is smooth and provides fine control. The sharpness at the center of the field of view is excellent, and (at least on my pair) the collimation of the optics appear to be spot on. Sharpness reduces a bit towards the edges, but it still gives pleasing star images right to the edge. The apparent field of view is also very impressive (4.4 x 15 = 66 degrees) - this is important because it makes finding objects much easier. Point it at the moon, and a surprising amount of detail is available for just 15x magnification. There is a tiny amount of false color on the limb of the moon, but nothing too distracting. The 15x magnification is just large enough to differentiate most Messier objects from stars. Perfect for getting to know the night sky.
To my surprise, it is just as easy to hold these binoculars steady as a pair of 7x35. It seems that the extra length of the binoculars help - hold them at the objective end. I often use them lying on my back - this gives reasonably steady views, but my arms need a rest after a few minutes. Same problem with the very light 7x35 binoculars I own. I think it is mostly due to the weight of my arms rather than the binoculars!
Are they optically perfect? No. Any good for planets? No. If you are after perfection, you will need to spend 10x the amount and buy a top end astronomical telescope. Any real down sides? I find the rubber eye guards uncomfortable against my nose - however I am willing to put up with this as they get rid of stray light.
The supplied tripod adapter works well with my 7x35 binoculars, but it is useless for the 15x70 - it twists and oscillates from side to side. Get a metal one.
