the one to have, 2010-07-23 Have looked around for a new printer. After reading the reviews decided this was the one for me. If I can install it any one can. It was sooooooooooo easy.
Prince of prints - unless you anticipate v heavy use, 2010-07-16 I'm very pleased with this printer. I needed it to replace a (relatively new) HP Photosmart printer that was completely rubbish. It was the third HP I'd used (I kept with them as I had spare ink cartridges but was false economy) and all developed faults (just after warranty period ..... hmmm, strange that!) and the print quality was average at best. The Canon is far superior in terms of print quality although this comes at the cost of higher ink consumption. So factor that in. If you want a workhorse for frequent printing, this might not be the most cost effective option. Aesthetically, it's a nice looking, tidy printer. Build quality is excellent.
Set up was simple. From doorstep to first print took about an hour. Some reviewers here claim half that, which is admirable but as the software takes around 20 minutes to load, that seems optimistic. It's well packaged and construction is relatively simple and well explained. The set up book is completely clear and wireless set up was easy even for a numpty like me. If you want to connect with the wired option, you need a USB cable though which is not supplied. This is fairly common practice though.
Wireless printing has a slight delay, but is still quicker than the HP wired option, so no problem. And when you print the door at the front magically opens. Oh simple things impress me!
Print quality on the most basic setting is completely acceptable - the HP had a "draft" setting which the Canon doesn't. It would be nice to have an even lower quality setting to help with ink consumption. It's well worth putting it on the lowest setting though. Printing is fast and quiet.
Scanning and copying works well. Have not tried the printing on CD option and probably never will.
Printing photographs, the quality is superb. Well up there with commercial options. BUT you will go through ink like noone's business, so fine for the odd image, but if you want to print off all your holiday pictures, then my advice is use a commercial operation for an economic option as there are some very competitive prices out there.
Better in every way than the HP, except in ink consumption - but then that's related to image quality as well as the system. For an occasional printer, it's excellent - if you print a lot, then maybe think of lower ink consumption manufacturer as Canon are known for this issue. Perhaps more for home than home/small office.
Canon MP640, 2010-07-14 Only limited use but excellant so far. Other than a couple of minor issues, the set up was pretty straightforward even for WiFi.
Canon MP640 - Great if it works, 2010-07-22 Firstly the printer performance is fine, great even. Speed of fine, quality is very good and it is all good while things are working. However the overriding fact is that I have had 3 delivered and 3 have malfunctioned in some way or other in the space of 6 months. Amazons customers service has been faultless and they have apologised but its simply not their fault.
The 1st 2 printers had an error code which when we rang the canon service line they knew straightaway it couldn't be fixed. The latest one something went pop, a smell of burning or hot electronics came from it and that was it. It wasn't the plug fuse if thats what you were thinking.
I have 2 other canon printers, both of which, fingers crossed have performed faultlessly for 2 and 5 years. I am hesitant to recommend this product because I just think they have an inherent flaw which means you will suffer a breakdown.
Fast and good quality, 2010-07-13 We bought this to replace a cable-connected scanner and separate printer. As with any wi-fi device, it took a while to set up, but once done on the first PC, it connected a second PC and a laptop with no problems. We find it to be very quick with a page of text coming out in a matter of seconds and photo prints being much quicker than our previous Epson. Scanning and photocopying are very simple. The lowest quality setting is perfectly adequate for letters etc. In its high-quality setting it produces sharp and evenly toned photographs.
All in all we are very pleased with this printer/scanner/copier and would recommend it.
